Up…up..and..away!

Boost Your Reach

If you’re serious about Facebook marketing, you must use ads. Generating ads that increase reach, drive engagement and boost interactions are key to running a successful Facebook marketing campaign. A lot of small business just don’t have the time, energy or budget to run long, detailed and expensive advertising campaigns. If you fall into this category, this is what I suggest you do.

Try using the “Boost Post” option. Start with finding your posts with the highest engagement rate. In other words look back on your past uploaded content and find the post that had the most likes, comments and shares. These things combined equal your engagement rate and translate into your most engaging content. Once you find your post with the highest engagement rate, select the “Boost Post” option.

From here you can easily deliver targeted ads for as little as $1.00 a day. You will be able to segment and narrow who sees your post so that those that have already seen it are left out. The great thing about using the “Boost Post” option is that you already know that the content you are serving up, has been successful in the past. It’s simple and easy and in less than 5 minutes, you can have your boosted post reaching more people and driving engagement. Effective Instagram For Business

Instagram is a great place for businesses to grow their social community. It’s easy and fun, and has a huge upside for small businesses. It’s not like Facebook or Twitter, which have both become huge paid marketing platforms. Instagram is almost purely image driven which allows users to quickly engage and interact. And because visual content is so easy to create, Instagram is the perfect social network for small businesses.

Lets take a quick look at some of the key things that you should know about Instagram and how to use it to your business advantage.

  • Instagram is almost entirely a mobile app. Yes you can view Instagram from your laptop but if you want to upload, edit or share images, you can only do this from a mobile device.

  • Because Instagram is primarily a mobile app, it’s best to post when people are on their mobile devices. Generally, most people are on their desktops during the workday and if they are on a social media site its usually Facebook or Twitter. The best times to post on Instagram is after people get off work and are on their mobile devices. This would put the sweet spot of Instagram posting between 5:00 and 6:00 PM.

  • You may want to upload pictures from your computer to Instagram but can’t because Instagram won’t all it. Well its actually fairly simple and can be done in a matter of seconds. You have a couple different options available. One is connect your mobile device to your computer and manually move the pictures over. From there you can easy access them and upload to your Instagram account. Another way is to upload your pictures to Facebook or Twitter first, and then copy the images and share them on Instagram. I like doing it this way because it gives you the chance to expand your social reach across multiple networks.

The Basics Of Hashtags In Social Media

The Basics Of Hashtags In Social Media

The symbol # placed before a word or phrase is called a Hashtag. It is used to mark keywords or topics in a social media post. Hashtags are a way to group content and create discussion across social media. By creating Hashtags, users are able to direct their content into groups or discussions amongst large audiences. Hashtags have become the single greatest way to maximize your content exposure on Twitter and Instagram. When you use Hashtag, large audiences are able to follow and find your content without actually being your friend or follower. This feature becomes especially powerful when used for branding purposes and marketing campaigns across multiple social media channels. Hashtags allow you and your followers to search and organize content by relevance and trending topics.

Nike recently launched a massive social media campaign Winner Stays, leading up to the World Cup in Brazil. By hashtagging #riskeverything Nike was able to create a massive community following. Everytime someone clicked #riskeverything or tagged something #riskeverthing, they were directed into Nikes social community built around the World Cup and their Winner Stays marketing campaign.

Lets take another example and apply it to something more simple. Lets say you are a small business and you sell flowers. Everytime you post a new picture of your flowers, you make the hashtag #flowers. What this does, is anytime anyone clicks on #flowers or searches for #flowers, they will see your post, regardless if you made the hashtag or not. By hashtagging your content with #flowers, you put that content into a community with the same hashtags. Here is some quick advice from Twitter on how to use hashtags and what they are:

  • People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.

  • Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.

  • Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.

  • If you Tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your Tweet

  • Don’t #spam #with #hashtags. Don’t over-tag a single Tweet. (Best practices recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per Tweet.)

  • Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.

Your social community

Start Building Your Community

Are you still operating under the misconception that simply being on social media is enough? Do you think that social media is the best place to broadcast all of your marketing campaigns because you can reach so many people? Well if you’re like most small businesses out there, you probably answered yes to both of those questions. But let me ask you this. How are you being social and building community if all you do is speak and never listen? You’re probably missing the point of what it means to be social online and you’re missing out on ways to maximize your return on investment.

Whether you’re a seasoned social brand with millions of followers or a small mom and pop operation with a couple hundred followers it doesn’t really matter. What matters is the strength of your social community and how you interact with your fans. It’s well known that when people directly connect with or have a personal attachment to a brand, business or product; that they will become loyal repeat customers. So building lasting relationships between your brand and followers, is the key to capitalizing on your return on investment.

Where most businesses go wrong or totally miss the point, is when they use social media to only speak and not listen. Providing your audience with content is not enough. You need to be prepared to listen to what your fans want. This means understanding what your community wants and providing them with something of value.

So how do you listen? Well its simple…by measuring user engagement and interactions. If your fans are not engaging and interacting with your content, you’re not providing them with anything of value. Your content needs to carry value that will promote interactions. If you’re providing content of no value, you’re wasting your time. One-way communication is a surefire way to loose the support of fans and get un-friended or unfollowed.

So the biggest question is always “what type of content should I post?” Ultimately who really knows? Every social community is different. Using your social media as an extension of your customer service to build and nurture relationships will be your best approach. Lets look at an example of a company that is doing a great job at engaging their community across multiple social channels. The North Face is a great example of a brand that is actively proving their customers with valuable content that promotes engagement and fosters interactions. Whether it is a powerful new YouTube video highlighting never before explored frontiers, a action picture on Instagram or a simple Tweet giving a shout out to a new up and coming brand. The North Face is proving their audience with content relevant to their brand and their community. Looking at recent campaigns launched by The North Face, you will see that they are adding to the outdoor community by supplying valuable and interesting content. They are not blasting Facebook with promotional ads or pushing their products; instead they are starting two-way conversations. In the last 30 days, they have seen nearly a 10% increase in their total social media audience and over 422,000 new interactions. With 400,000 new fans on Facebook alone during this time, The North Face is clearly a shinning example of a community based social strategy that is paying off in a big way.

So the next time you go to send out a new Tweet or get ready to hit Post, think about this. Is this content going to engage my community and promote interactions? How is what I’m about to post going to foster and build new and existing relationships? Am I speaking or am I listening? If you ask yourself these questions every time you interact with your fans and followers, you will be on your way to a successful social media strategy.

Thursdays and Fridays

What Day Of The Week Should I Post On Facebook

Lets think about this for a minute… What part of the week are people less focused on work and more on other things like social media?

Thursdays and Fridays of course!

According to Beth Cooper over at Buffer App, engagement rates go up by 18% on Thursdays and Fridays. Additionally 86% of Facebook posts are published between Monday and Fridays. So it goes without saying that the best time to post would be towards the end of the workweek.

Now that we know Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to post on Facebook, we need to know what time. According to Dan Zarrella, the best time to post is between 1pm and 3pm. During this time more people are online and distracted from work and are more inclined to engage with social media content.

So in general, if you want to reach more people and increase engagement, you need to be publishing your content on either Thursday or Friday between 1pm and 3pm.

If you have any questions or comment, please do not hesitate to ask.
